H.323 VideoconferencingInternet-based, or IP (H.323), videoconferencing is in use in Europe and Worldwide on a daily basis. Welsh Video Network IP Service During 2002 the WVN began the move towards becoming an IP (and not ISDN) network, built on the existing JANET network, which includes the North Wales MAN and the South Wales MAN. The JANET Videoconferencing Service - IP (JVCS - IP) became a full service on Monday 17th February 2003. Documentation to support the service is available here. For information on IP Videoconferencing see here. UK H.323 Architecture Group The report of the H.323 Architecture group is now available. This report covers the structure needed to run a UK national IP videoconferencing service and looks at such issues as physical equipment location, addressing, security and QoS requirements. The WVN IP pilot and service will be developed in accordance with the recommendations made in the H.323 Architecture Group's final report. European Addressing Scheme - Global Dialling Scheme The WVN IP service uses an addressing scheme developed in consultation with other European academic networks. This dialling scheme has now been adopted by UKERNA for JANET IP videoconferencing. The dialling scheme has been deployed in a number of partner national research networks beyond Europe, including the United States and has become known as the Global Dialling Scheme. Further Information about H.323 Internet Videoconferencing For those wishing to learn more about H.323 videoconferencing the WVN has compiled a list of useful documentation, including links to drafts of the standard, introductions, primers and deployment issues. |
