| ISDN (Integrated Services Digital
Network) is a stable and trusted method of providing high
quality video conferencing links between sites. The H.320
Standard defines ISDN. Initially, all institutions which are part of the Welsh Video Network
used ISDN6
connections into the studios. This provided dedicated 384Kbit/s bandwidth
for videoconferences.
Funding for the installation of ISDN6 facilities
was provided to all institutions.
Institutions had some options as to how they
could install
ISDN connections in the studios: the ISDN supplier could install
ISDN sockets directly into the studio; they could install it to
a central patch bay; or it could be provided through the
institution's
telephone exchange - if the exchange had this capability.
Institutions liaised with their supplier(s) to evaluate the best
option for their particular circumstances.
Institutions needed to provide three standard ISDN2e circuits for the
videoconferencing equipment to be able to function correctly.
Multipoint switching services for the ISDN network
are provided by the JANET Videoconferencing Service (JVCS), based in
Edinburgh. See http://www.jvcs.video.ja.net
for more information.
